While corporations are shipping jobs over seas, politicians are giving the same corporations control over their policies through special interests, and the Supreme Court is giving these same corporations unlimited power in politics. The middle class as we used to know it will soon be gone. So in order to get ahead in life and get out of the rat race I decided to start my own company in 2000 while working full time in construction. Some may say my choice was ill advised especially since I decided to venture into the ever changing entertainment industry. To get by during the infancy of my new company, I continued working in the construction business and as the economy of the country went up and down so did my income. It was after the financial collapse when I was forced, with my back against the wall, to make a life altering decision. I could continue working blindly, hoping that I could make enough money to pay the bills and feed the family, or I could make a change in my life and truly focus on growing my company which had yet to make any profit. It was at that moment that I decided to chase the real American Dream…a life that was not decided by others. I would control my own destiny, and my future as well as my family’s would either rise or fall with my entertainment company. I saw no difference in being in an economy that was failing, or building up my own business in an industry that has a high failure rate.
Am I a victim of society that wants a hand out from the government? Or, am I trying to make it on my own? I am not a victim of society, but a product of a society and a city that is ranked 9th in the US in crime and continuously ranked at the bottom of 300 largest cities. Rockford, IL, a city that has been blighted by manufacturing jobs sent to third world countries and an education system completely abandoned. In its place, drugs, gangs and violence are now the things that make my home city famous. Was the decision to change my life hard? No, I had no choice! If I am going to fail, it will be on my own terms, not because some billionaire decided they want a bigger raise, so now my job is expendable. I will not surrender and let my children grow up in a city that offers no hope. I will make sure they succeed in life.
With the recent exchange of rhetoric for the upcoming election there is one clear comment that has been a source of outrage and it got me thinking. I have reflected on my last few years working and using every little penny I could scrape up and put into my company. Living a life with no stable income, the constant threat of a disappearing job, and no private health insurance is not very fulfilling. So with all these issues stacked against me, I haven’t paid any federal income taxes, but not by choice. Does this make me a “taker”, or a “victim”? I think not, I am a pursuer of success and the millions of people like me would probably agree. The one difference is I will fight against the status quo and “get rich or die trying.”
My entertainment company is on the verge of a massive mainstream breakthrough. We are making a lot of noise on the independent entertainment scene and when we break through, I will have my vindication. After years of struggle, setbacks and perseverance, we will be a major player that will create jobs and opportunities for people just like me. I will be fulfilling my dreams and goals and the many others involved who may not have had a chance, if I didn’t take these risks…”and to me, that is 100% American.”
The risk takers will be rewarded in the end because without us, there would be no United States of Americans, No Corporations, No Inventors, or even a LAS VEGAS or HOLLYWOOD. Nothing GREAT would exist without RISK, and that is 100% American, whether your a (47%er) or born a 1%.. ”
