The BMW X1 recently arrived in the United States for the first time, and to get the compact crossover off on the right foot, BMW is appealing to skiers who want a capable luxury ride to take them to the slopes. Partnering with popular ski manufacturer K2, the automaker has developed two mountain-ready X1 models: a Powder Ride Edition production trim and the Concept K2 Powder Ride. The former will go on sale in November, while the latter will debut at the LA Auto Show in the same month.
Coming standard with all-wheel drive and a pair of custom K2 Powder Ride skis, the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition will allow its owners to get nearly anywhere in the snow, both on and off the mountain. Models start as either the BMW X1 xDrive28i or xDrive35i with the base xLine trim, but they receive a number of skiing-focused additions, including BMW’s roof rack and 460 roof box, all-weather floor mats and a specially designed ski and snowboard bag. Buyers will have to act before the lifts shut down this season however, as the Powder Ride Edition will only be on sale through this winter.
“In reality, any BMW X1 is a great choice for a ski getaway in New England, but the Powder Ride Edition is designed for drivers that start craving a return to the slopes the moment they get back in the office on Monday morning,” said Marshal Cabot, general manager of BMW of Peabody, a BMW dealer in Massachusetts. ”It not only features all the functionality you need for your weekend trips, but the styling to impress both at the mountain and on your daily commute.”
In addition to a unique X-shaped decal on the doors and wheel arches, the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition gets Glacier Silver matte exterior trim and special 18-inch alloy wheels. Other interior touches include a sports leather steering wheel, fabric- and leather-trimmed seats, and dark copper accents. Skiers can also choose between Alpine White, Black, Glacier Silver and Mineral Gray for the exterior paint job.
If the Powder Ride Edition is focused on getting to and from the mountain smoothly and stylishly, then the BMW X1 Concept K2 Powder Ride is more designed for the exuberance of an après-ski party. Donning a vibrant Valencia Orange exterior with a side graphic that draws from a limited-edition K2 ski, the Concept K2 Powder Ride would clearly stand out from the other crossovers parked near the base lodge. To keep the fun going after the sun goes down, BMW outfitted the X1 concept’s unique roof structure with LED spotlights and added a premium Harman Kardon hi-fi sound system complete with two-way loudspeakers that generate 320 watts.
The 2013 BMW X1 lineup features a choice of two TwinTurbo Power engines, including a 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit that produces 240 horsepower yet returns up to 34 mpg on the highway, and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder that outputs an impressive 300 horsepower. Regardless of powertrain, all BMW X1 buyers benefit from 47.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down.
”It doesn’t matter if you are headed to the mountains or your in-laws’ place, the X1 has plenty of space for all the road trip essentials, as well as the efficiency for less pit stops at the gas station,” added Cabot. ”And, because it’s a BMW, you know your time on the road is never going to be boring or uncomfortable.”
