During a live podcast earlier today, the text message marketing company Text2VIP announced that effective April 1, 2013, they will not allow the use of SMS campaigns targeted toward drivers via radio and billboard. In what is being called a “landmark move” by The American Coalition to Stop Texting While Driving, the text marketing software provider to brands and businesses nationwide announced it will no longer provide clients with text marketing campaigns targeted to consumers who are driving.
“Today’s announcement was only a small step in what we believe to be an important direction”, said Terry Robinson, Executive Director at Text2VIP. “Providing our stable of clients with the most effective and targeted text message marketing campaign options remains a top priority for Text2VIP. However, the inherent dangers associated with texting-and-driving are simply too important to ignore.” Many Text2VIP clients have been with Text2VIP since 2009 and some have already responded with their support of Text2VIP’s announcement. Robinson went on to say; “Just as being the text message marketing provider of choice by franchisees of such well respected systems like Chick-fil-A, Dominos Pizza, Pita Pit and Elevation Burger is a privilege for us, being a responsible corporate citizen is as well. As it pertains to text campaigns, we view our role in the safety and well being of everyone on the road as an important one.”
You are 23 times more likely to crash if you are texting and driving, according to http://www.distraction.gov “The statistics are indisputable”, said Robinson. “Our ban on conducting these campaigns will only impact clients who use radio advertising. The vast majority of hundreds of Text2VIP clients nationally will be entirely unaffected as their SMS campaigns aren’t conducted via radio or billboard. The majority of our text message marketing campaigns are conducted inside retail stores, quick service restaurants, and fast casual restaurant chains. These are not only the most successful SMS campaigns, but also feature the highest participation rates.” Robinson closed by adding, “Being the first SMS marketing provider in our industry to publicly take this position is something Text2VIP is proud of, but frankly, when seeing the number of SMS related driving accidents, it was an easy decision to make.”
