Honda recently unveiled the all-new 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid, with a plan to stir things up in the midsize-sedan market. The new gas-electric vehicle is expected to return class-leading fuel efficiency, and while official EPA estimates have not been released yet, Honda assesses the Accord Hybrid will earn 49 mpg in the city, more than any other midsize hybrid sedan.
That impressive mileage return is made possible by a brand-new 2.0-liter, 141-horsepower Atkinson-cycle engine paired with a 124-kilowatt electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Drivers will be able to choose from three separate driving modes, operating the vehicle in gas-only, electric-only or combination modes for maximum power or efficiency. Additionally, the Accord Hybrid will be able to transition between these modes itself for the optimal fuel consumption and power balance.
“When the Accord Hybrid arrives this fall, drivers who love the gas-powered version will have another option to help them save money at the gas pump,” said Ken Hyman, general manager of Bel Air Honda, a Maryland Honda dealer. “As the gas-electric version of Honda’s best-selling vehicle, the Accord Hybrid has a built-in fan base of people who don’t want to sacrifice space, comfort or refinement but still want a fuel-efficient vehicle for their daily commute.”
In addition to the advanced powertrain, the Honda Accord Hybrid will sport some of the most advanced safety features in the industry, including Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and the first-ever LaneWatch blind-spot display. Inside the cabin, drivers will find a rearview camera with multiple angles, instant fuel-economy readouts and energy-flow information to encourage more fuel-efficient driving habits.
