The look and feel of the Lexus lineup has changed in recent years with a new family spindle grille, sharper design lines and sportier suspensions, but the luxury brand’s long-held reputation for reliability and value remains intact. Lexus was recently named the top auto brand in the 2014 J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), marking the third consecutive year that it has achieved that honor.
Based on surveys of more than 41,000 original owners of 2011-model-year vehicles, the 2014 J.D. Power VDS recorded the problems that drivers had with their three-year-old rides in the past 12 months. Covering 202 potential auto issues, J.D. Power ranked each model and overall brand by finding how many problems were experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100). With a score of just 68 PP100, Lexus easily outperformed second-place Mercedes-Benz, which came in at 104 PP100. Meanwhile, the Lexus ES, GS, LS and RX proved most dependable in the Compact Premium Car, Midsize Premium Car, Large Premium Car and Midsize Premium CUV segments, respectively.
“Though the latest J.D. Power study found that overall vehicle dependability in the industry is actually declining for the first time in more than 15 years, Lexus’ dependability continues to improve,” said Vincent Liuzzi, general manager of Lexus of Watertown, a Lexus dealer in Boston. “That means that buyers can expect to get more money back for their Lexus when they turn it in down the road, even as the brand comes out with more aggressive vehicle designs.”
While the J.D. Power VDS takes a look at older models, Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com recently honored the current Lexus lineup for its long-tem value. For the second straight year, Lexus emerged as the top luxury brand in the auto-research site’s 5-Year Cost to Own Awards. Beyond factoring in Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price and projected depreciation, KBB.com calculated ongoing financial considerations like fuel, maintenance, repairs, financing, insurance and state fees to determine the 2014-model-year vehicles that should be the most affordable during the first five years of ownership.
