With the midsize Lexus RX reigning as America’s best-selling luxury SUV, Lexus has already made a name for itself in the utility-vehicle market, but the brand has yet to tap the fast-growing compact-crossover-SUV segment. That is about to change following the debut of the all-new Lexus NX at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition last week, as the small utility vehicle is slated to arrive at U.S. Lexus dealers this fall.
Donning a decidedly aggressive exterior, the Lexus NX sports a large version of the brand’s spindle grille, swept-back LED headlamps and heavily flared front fenders, while sharp creases along the sides lead to L-shaped LED taillights in the rear. That bold look will be matched by two responsive powertrains in the U.S. market, including a new 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine in the NX 200t that produces 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The second drivetrain option will include a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder, generator, motor and battery that all combine to output 194 horsepower in the NX 300h hybrid.
“Luxury compact crossovers like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 are going to have some serious competition on their hands when the Lexus NX goes on sale later this year,” said Vincent Liuzzi, general manager of Lexus of Watertown, a Lexus dealer in Boston. “The NX is engaging in all senses of the word, whether you’re talking about its head-turning style, its responsive ride or its intuitive connectivity inside the cabin.”
Featuring a user-friendly Human Machine Interface (HMI) at the bottom of its flowing center stack, the Lexus NX will be available with a trio of technology firsts from the brand, including a Wireless Charging Tray for mobile phones, a new Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touch pad, and a G sensor and boost meter on the Multi-information Display. Buyers will also be able to opt for active-safety technologies like the Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
