With more than 100 patents filed for new technologies in the redesigned 2015 F-150, Ford is refusing to rest on its laurels with the next generation of America’s best-selling vehicle. That push for pickup-truck innovation was recently recognized by the New England Motor Press Association, which presented the 2015 Ford F-150 with its annual Yankee Cup technology award.
Honoring an automotive feature, system or vehicle that makes driving significantly safer, more cost-efficient or more enjoyable, the Yankee Cup is determined with the input of engineering faculty from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among the many breakthroughs in the new Ford F-150 are its LED side-mirror spotlights, which illuminate the sides of the pickup truck for better visibility when changing a tire or pitching a tent, along with a new tailgate that not only fully integrates a step, but also can be automatically lowered with the press of a button on the key fob. Meanwhile, the 2015 F-150’s versatility will be further enhanced by a new BoxLink cargo-management system with lockable die-cast aluminum tie-down cleats.
“The 2015 F-150 won’t even go on sale until late this year, but it is already causing a stir in the industry with numerous innovations inside and out,” said Jeff Klein, general manager of Thomas Ford, a Beverly, MA Ford dealership. “While the new F-150 will continue to be as rugged as it’s always been, it will be made of equal parts brains and brawn, whether you’re looking at the dashboard or under the hood.”
Other segment firsts planned for the 2015 Ford F-150 include LED headlights, a 360-degree camera view, 400-watt interior power outlets and loading ramps stored inside the pickup bed. With more high-strength steel in its frame and the first-ever use of high-strength aluminum alloys in the body of an F-150, the 2015 model will drop up to 700 pounds compared to its predecessor, thereby improving acceleration, fuel efficiency, braking times, and even towing and hauling capabilities. Buyers will also be able to opt for an all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that boasts many firsts of its own, including the debut of standard Auto Start-Stop technology in the F-150, the first use of a compacted graphite-iron cylinder block in a gas powerplant and the first implementation of fracture-split main-bearing caps for increased efficiency.
