The 2014 Mazda5 and Mazda MX-5 Miata may be two completely different vehicles serving different buyer types, but they do share one important thing in common: Both models have proven to experience fewer issues than their competitors on average. Topping their categories in the recently released J.D. Power 2014 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), the Mazda5 was recognized in the Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle segment while the MX-5 Miata led the Compact Sporty Car segment.
Factoring in the feedback of more than 86,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2014 models, J.D. Power asked 233 questions related to various vehicle characteristics during the first 90 days of ownership to determine the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) for each nameplate. The 2014 Mazda5 had a lower PP100 score than the Kia Soul and Ford C-MAX to win its segment in the IQS, while the 2014 MX-5 Miata bested the Volkswagen GTI and Scion tC.
“Though the Mazda5 and MX-5 Miata serve different purposes, both models satisfy buyers in their respective segments because of their clever engineering,” said Greg Ryland, general manager of Russel Mazda, a Baltimore Mazda dealership. “The Mazda5 offers young families all the functionality of a traditional minivan with a smaller footprint, while the MX-5 Miata provides driving enthusiasts with world-class handling at a middle-class price.”
Accommodating six passengers or up to 44.4 cubic feet of cargo space with its third row folded, the 2014 Mazda5 features a highly versatile interior while still returning up to 28 mpg on the highway with its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Parents can also stay easily connected on the road with a standard USB port and optional Bluetooth hands-free compatibility, while the kids can be kept occupied with an available rear DVD entertainment system. On the other hand, the 2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata boasts a nearly even front-to-rear weight distribution, delivering smooth and nimble cornering at a price that starts at less than $25,000.
