First Hangout, discussing the role of air filter testing and Camfil’s state-of-the-art proving ground, now online
Each day, the average person breathes 11,000 liters of air — about 90 percent of it indoors. While many might take it as a given that indoor air is clean and safe, that’s not always the case. Indeed, harmful particles and gases are often present in indoor environments — unless those environments feature proper air filtration. Camfil — the world’s leading provider of clean air solutions — has been a pioneer in the development of cutting-edge air filters, and a leader in helping businesses, schools, hospitals, and other organizations understand the advantages of this next generation of air filters.
In a continuing series of Google Hangout videos — posted to YouTube and the company’s Web site — Camfil experts will be delving into both the basics and the nitty gritty of achieving optimal performance from air filters.
The first Google Hangout, exploring the importance of air filter testing and Camfil’s state-of-the-art lab in Riverdale, New Jersey, is now available on YouTube at “Camfil’s Riverdale Filter Testing” and at Camfil’s website at “The Importance of Air Filter Testing” In this installment, Camfil’s Manager of Marketing and Technical Materials, Charlie Seyffer discusses the importance of air filter testing — and how the company’s Riverdale facility helps ensure the superior performance of Camfil air filters while also enabling businesses to test filters to their own specific requirements.
Air filter testing reports, Seyffer says, are essential, as the air moving through a filter isn’t visible. “How is the air filter user supposed to know they are getting the clear air they are paying for?” he asks. The solution has two prongs, says Seyffer, with Camfil at the forefront on each.
First, standards are key. When filters are judged against a standard — such as the ASHRAE 52.2 Standard in North America — it not only ensures that the filter makes the grade, but enables comparative testing, an ‘apples-to-apples’ evaluation between competing filters. “You need a baseline to compare one filter to another, and standards provide that,” says Seyffer.
Camfil’s New Jersey lab, Seyffer notes, is equipped not only to test to ASHRAE and other standards from around the world, but to go beyond them — testing to very specific customer requirements. Such customized testing, Seyffer adds, is becoming a common request from manufacturers and other air filter customers, as “increasingly companies have specific needs to remove contaminants.” Meanwhile, Camfil uses the facility to further its own quality assurance, testing samples of filters from the company’s global manufacturing plants to ensure they meet Camfil’s strict criteria.
