A young boy was recently struck and killed by an 18-wheeler at a truck stop in Bexar County, Texas. Media reports say the accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. after the family of the one-year-old child stopped for fuel at the Pilot truck stop off Interstate 35 and Loop 1604.

“The driver of another big rig pulled out of a fueling bay, did not see the child and ran him over, the release stated.
“The truck in the bay next to them was pulling out from the gas bay, the driver heard a noise and quickly realized he had run over the child that had been playing in that area,” said Bexar County Sheriff’s Office spokesman James Keith.”
Texas based truck crash lawyer Amy Witherite says that many pedestrians in the state become injured in accidents involving 18-wheelers each year. Children are among those that are most at risk Witherite emphasizes stating, “statistically children and elderly individuals are at a higher risk than other groups of being seriously hurt in any type of pedestrian accident involving a motor vehicle.
The most recent estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that over 76,000 people in the U.S. were injured in these accidents in 2012. A reported 4,743 people were killed. Many of these involve commercial vehicles, which due to their scale typically lead to fatal injuries.
In another headline making 18-wheeler accident that occurred in Bexar County last year, a pedestrian died after the driver of the truck struck him and failed to stop to render aid.

“SAN ANTONIO – A pedestrian who was struck by an 18-wheeler on the Southwest Side died at the hospital late Monday night.
San Antonio police said the accident happened along SW Loop 410 near Highway 90.
Police said the victim was walking in the median when he was struck by the big rig. The driver failed to stop and render aid.
The victim was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Transportation safety advocates suggest there are things individuals can do to reduce their risks of being involved in a pedestrian accident in Texas. These include:
Wearing clothing that reflects well, whether during the daytime or at night to increase one’s visibility to drivers
Only walking on sidewalks whenever possible
Only crossing roads at crosswalks and other designated areas when possible
Keeping a watchful eye on children when walking or being in areas where there are many vehicles present
In cases where a pedestrian has been injured as a result of the negligence of a driver Witherite states that victims can discuss their case with a personal injury attorney to understand the scope of their legal options. According to Witherite “this step is often critical for pedestrians who have been hurt in an accident or the surviving family members of those killed as a result of this type of tragedy due to the challenges that accompany trying to obtain what is fair compensation for financial damages.”
Charges have not been filed in connection with the recent truck accident. Officials were investigating the incident at the time of the report.
