KAKE reported that identity theft targeting patient insurance and medical records are growing in popularity.
Receiving medical treatment or prescriptions and the use of one’s medical information to gain access to a patient’s bank account are steps some who engage in identity theft take. The report notes the importance of guarding one’s insurance and medical information in the same way one would their money.
Mary-Beth Chambers with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is quoted as stating “If you see something on a date of service you don’t remember, or from a provider that you don’t recall actually getting services from, call your insurance company.”
Individuals who suspect they may have had their medical identity stolen can contact their insurance company to initiate an investigation by experts who will know how to work within guidelines outlined by HIPAA.
A Forbes magazine report says that 91 percent of healthcare organizations have been affected by data breaches in the last two years, which have resulted in patient personal information being stolen. On the black market, health insurance information may be sold for as much as $70, the article further states.
