“We found that during the discovery there had been an electrical problem in the building. They overloaded the circuits and started an electrical fire that caused the building to catch fire,” Rand recalls. There were also no smoke detectors or proper fire doors in the apartments.
The jury awarded Rand’s client $6.6 million. Spear says his client periodically calls him and updates him on how she and her family are doing. He says he has represented the children and grandchildren of clients. “It really makes it very special for me.”
Spear says no matter the amount of settlement or jury verdict, he and his staff are there to help. “We’re representing people when they’re really having a difficult time. They lose their job, they can have difficulty paying their rent, mortgage, utilities or just putting food on the table.”
