The harsh Pennsylvania winter has come and gone, and as the weather breaks, more and more construction projects will begin in both the private and public sector. It’s important to note the risk of injury to both workers and consumers increases drastically during this time of year.
In 2015, there were 173 fatalities to Pennsylvania workers. Construction workers accounted for the largest percentage of those deaths.
Common accidents on construction sites include slip and fall, equipment malfunctions, electrical shocks and burns, and falling debris. Along with many others these are often the result of the negligence of the supervisor on the job site. OSHA reports ten common reasons that construction accidents occur.
In addition, as construction seasons comes underway, hospitals will see around $206.1 billion dollars in accident costs. Attorney Joel Kofsky urges Pennsylvania construction workers to use caution this summer when they are on the job. He explains, “Sometimes accidents are unavoidable. But, if you are hurt, you need to exercise good judgment to protect yourself from what can happen to you after you get hurt.”
The extent of any injury dictates when the workers can return to work. So, when construction accidents happen, recovery depends on several factors. These include the type of injury, the severity of the injury, and the length of rehabilitation.
Attorney Kofsky also cautions workers about returning to work too early. He explains, “All too often; workers are concerned about getting back on the job so that they can pay their bills. They don’t understand that if they re-aggravate an injury, they could end up off work longer, which leads to more lost wages.”
The bottom line is very clear. The supervisor at the job site is responsible for creating a safe work environment, and if a worker gets hurt or becomes permanently disabled workers compensation is warranted.
Lost wages that are a result of a construction site accident can significantly hurt Pennsylvania families and the first thing to do is contact an attorney right away to ensure you are getting the compensation you deserve.
