August 13, 2018 – Lawrenceville, NJ, and Huntington, NY—
JADPRO Live is a 4-day annual conference geared to the very specific scientific needs of the advanced practitioner in oncology: the nurse practitioner (NP), physician assistant (PA) or PharmD who is on the front lines of caring for patients with cancer. At this conference an ongoing initiative, the Study to Measure Advanced Practitioner Retention of Targeted Information and Education (SMARTIE), measures oncology learning and how it is used with advanced practitioners and their patients. Every year advanced practitioners are in need of earning educational credits for their licensure and JADPRO Live has proved an effective way to do this.
As new cancer therapies become available, it is important that health care providers are well-prepared to educate their patients about the benefits, risks, and potential side effects of these treatments. Results of a recent survey focusing on immunotherapies demonstrate that advanced practitioners who attend the annual JADPRO Live conference are putting what they learn there directly into practice.
“The education that we present at JADPRO Live is crucial to helping these practitioners stay one step ahead of these rapid changes in treatment,” stated Pamela Hallquist Viale, RN, MS, CNS, ANP, President of the Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO).
The immunotherapy survey is just one part of the ongoing SMARTIE initiative conducted at JADPRO Live. The 115 respondents to this survey are a subset of the 1,237 conference attendees who “opted in” to participate. The data reveal that 95% of survey respondents educated patients about the potential side effects that occur with immunotherapy. Side effects of immunotherapy can be difficult and sometimes life threatening, ranging from pneumonitis and colitis to infections. Another confounding issue is that they often show up weeks or months after treatment takes place, compared with side effects of chemotherapy that show up right away. Among the additional findings was evidence that, after being exposed to related education at the conference, attendees put specific newly acquired patient education strategies into place, such as reinforcing to patients that they should report their symptoms early or expanding patient education in local clinics.
The SMARTIE initiative, conducted by Harborside Medical Education (a division of Harborside – a medical media, information & education company) received a “best in class” outcomes award at a recent conference of the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEhp) Industry Summit. Selected data from the 2017 survey will be presented during the International Cancer Education Conference in Atlanta, October 2–5, 2018 as well as the ACEhp Annual Conference in National Harbor, MD in January, 2019.
Now going into its sixth year, the JADPRO Live conference is expected to attract more than 1,500 NPs, PAs, PharmDs, and other oncology advanced practitioners. The 2018 conference will be held in Hollywood, Florida, at the Diplomat Hotel, November 1–4, 2018. Learn more at: https://www.eventscribe.com/2018/JADPROlive.
