You may remember golf as the sport Tiger Woods (AKA Tiger) was good at. But it wasn’t just him — Tiger won a lot of tournaments and broke some records along the way. But, he has recently fallen from the top of Score Golf magazine’s list (and a few other lists), but that doesn’t change what he has already accomplished on the golf course.
He was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 1997 and 1998, Golf Digest’s Player of the Decade (2000), and PGA Player of the Year (1997, 2000). In 2000 he became the first player since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win three straight PGAs.
Woods began playing golf at age 2 and by age 6 he was winning junior tournaments. He attended Stanford University from 1996 to 1998 but left school to turn professional and compete on the PGA Tour.
In 2001 Kind of wood achieved a rare feat when he won five consecutive starts on both the U.S. Tour and European Tour 2001 campaigns. In 2002 he captured nine tournaments worldwide, including three majors (The Masters, The Open Championship at Muirfield, and The U.S. Open at Bethpage Black). Woods has been married to Elin Nordegren since 2004, but their marriage has been rocky for some time now. In 2009, he had a very public affair with Rachel Uchitel, who was then named by tabloids as being involved in an extramarital affair with Woods. Nordegren filed for divorce in 2010 and it was finalized in August of 2010.
He made headlines again when he announced that he had taken up golfing again after an extended period off the course due to injury issues. He went on to win the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia — his first major title since 2008 — in April 2018, which led some to speculate that this could be his comeback tour from injury problem. He is the youngest player to win the Masters Tournament, and he’s the only player in history to win the Career Grand Slam three times.
Woods is also the youngest golfer to record his 10th win at The Players Championship, which he did at age 24.
In December 2009, Woods announced his retirement from competitive golf after turning 35 years old. He cited chronic back pain as the main reason for his early retirement.
